Article page

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on August 28, 2010

The main attraction here are the paperlists but every once in a while I have also published some articles. Some of them are such that I have a need to dig them up occasionally. It’s getting increasingly difficult to find them from the backpages so I have gathered them all to one page. So, here it is, the article page. You can give feedback on the article page here.

The summer

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on June 23, 2010

Ok, it’s time to start enjoying the summer and spend less time building paperlists. I will not promise that I won’t post anything during the summer but most likely there will be very little going on in here for the next couple of months.

I will, however, correct the mess I have made with the atmospheric GHG measurement lists. I just posted the water vapor list. The list has its own section for stratospheric water vapor. When I had posted the list and was adding it to the index-page I noticed that I already had a list on stratospheric water vapor. Then I also noticed that there already are some water vapor papers in the atmospheric measurements of GHGs -list. It seems that the time has arrived for me to start checking what I already have before I make a new list. 🙂 I’ll check all these lists and try to make it less messy.

I hope you all will have a nice summer!

Climate science newslog

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on May 26, 2010

I just noticed a nice resource on climate science news and research – the Tietoukka Monitor. Site seems to be dedicated to giving links to climate related news and research. I’ll check out especially the research links in the right sidebar.

Last but not least – the site is run by a fellow Finn, so that alone is a good reason to give the place a visit. 🙂

Climate Physics Forums

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on May 12, 2010

This should be good: Climate Physics Forums. Owner of the site has done excellent work at physics forums on climate science issues. For discussing things, I prefer goold old forums over blogs, so I think I’ll be registering there myself.

General notes on this site

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on May 7, 2010

Things have been a bit slow here recently. I have been putting some effort to the Finnish blog we have – writing some brief news pieces on new research and things like that. But I think I also have to pay attention to this site little more now.

Paperlists will continue, but I will explore some new issues with them, while also continuing with the observation oriented climate science lists. The new issues will/might be:

– Global warming effects. Gail Zawacki suggested this some time ago. I have already added this section to the paperlist index, but I’ll have to see which lists should be moved to the new section from the temperature indicators section.

– Future climate predictions. Barry suggested this and I already added this also. There’s even one list already (the 1970’s predictions -list).

– Energy issues (and perhaps adaptation issues). There has been some discussion on the integral fast reactors (IFR) recently in Finland, so I thought that it would be good to see the research on the issues like that.

I also need to look at the division of the papers I have there now. Recently I added the “atmospheric composition” section but I need to see if there’s some better ways to divide these things to subsections.

You can use this thread to suggest some other subject areas and paperlist subjects for the areas I have mentioned above.

So nothing major, just some minor adjustments here and there.

By the way, recently John Cook started a new argument link resource. I have been adding some links there, especially to the peer-review part. I hope you will too participate to building this fine resource.

Yet another new climate science blog

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on February 7, 2010

With a few friends we have started a new blog called “Ilmastotieto” (Finnish word for “climate information”). Here’s the link. As you can guess from the title, it’s in Finnish. So from now on I’ll be writing there as well. I don’t think it will make my posting here much less as I probably will be publishing the articles I write there in Finnish here in English. There’s one already that I will publish here as soon as I have translated it to English. It will probably make the paperlist postings here little slower, though.

Anti-AGW papers debunked

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on January 12, 2010

I have added a new page: Anti-AGW papers debunked.

It is a resource that helps you to find debunkings of the papers that have been used to advance anti-AGW views. The list is sorted alphabetically by first author. The list doesn’t contain any explanations, just links to the relevant information as briefly as possible. There is only a handful of papers so far, but I will build the list as time goes by.

This is the thread for any feedback, suggestions, etc. for this resource.

Suggestions for paperlist subjects

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on January 7, 2010

Ok, that’s it, I’ve run out of paperlist subjects…

…well, seriously, I do have lot of ideas for new subjects for paperlists, but I thought that now would be a good time to ask you about the subjects you would like to see searched for papers. Post your suggestions here. I won’t make any promises, but I do like to keep my readers happy, so I imagine that most of the suggestions here will result in a list of papers in the future.

Some subjects I already have more or less in the works:
Glacial terminations
Theory of CO2 absorption properties
Lapse rate feedback
Ice-albedo feedback
Other feedbacks
CO2 emissions from mankind
laboratory measurements of other GHGs
Temperatures of other planets

Happy new year

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on January 1, 2010

This is what the first day of 2010 looked like in southern Finland at noon (temperature -14°C, snow depth about 30-50 cm):

For future generations: this is what winter looked like.

Skeptical Science and Climate Denial Crock of the Week in Finnish

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on December 29, 2009

With couple of friends we have started to translate the articles of John Cook to Finnish language, as we felt there’s not enough discussion available on the subject of denialist claims in our language. John’s article collection on the subject is the best available (in my honest opinion), so it is natural place to start. Here’s John’s announcement on the issue. So far there’s just a few articles translated, but we’ll keep adding them. My fellow-workers on this are Kaj Luukko and AJ.

We (Me, Kaj, and Tuomas Helin) have also started translating the Climate Denial Crock of the Week videos by Peter Sinclair. We do that by subtitles. Here’s the first one, Ice area vs Volume, with English and Finnish subtitles (use the up-pointing arrow in the lower left corner to select the language and turn the subtitles on/off). This first one was translated by Kaj Luukko. There are couple of others not yet incorporated to Peter Sinclair’s own videos, but they can be viewed here: The Big Mist Take translated by Tuomas Helin, and The “Temp leads Carbon” Crock translated by me. [UPDATE: as Kaj points out in the comment section below, the other two are also now incorporated to the Peter Sinclair’s videos, and are available at links given by Kaj below. Thanks, Kaj!]

Well, Finnish is a language for only small group of people (few millions), but perhaps some other, larger, languages get a boost from this. 🙂
