Skeptical Science and Climate Denial Crock of the Week in Finnish

Posted by Ari Jokimäki on December 29, 2009

With couple of friends we have started to translate the articles of John Cook to Finnish language, as we felt there’s not enough discussion available on the subject of denialist claims in our language. John’s article collection on the subject is the best available (in my honest opinion), so it is natural place to start. Here’s John’s announcement on the issue. So far there’s just a few articles translated, but we’ll keep adding them. My fellow-workers on this are Kaj Luukko and AJ.

We (Me, Kaj, and Tuomas Helin) have also started translating the Climate Denial Crock of the Week videos by Peter Sinclair. We do that by subtitles. Here’s the first one, Ice area vs Volume, with English and Finnish subtitles (use the up-pointing arrow in the lower left corner to select the language and turn the subtitles on/off). This first one was translated by Kaj Luukko. There are couple of others not yet incorporated to Peter Sinclair’s own videos, but they can be viewed here: The Big Mist Take translated by Tuomas Helin, and The “Temp leads Carbon” Crock translated by me. [UPDATE: as Kaj points out in the comment section below, the other two are also now incorporated to the Peter Sinclair’s videos, and are available at links given by Kaj below. Thanks, Kaj!]

Well, Finnish is a language for only small group of people (few millions), but perhaps some other, larger, languages get a boost from this.🙂

  1. […] Yhdessä Ari Jokimäen ja “AJ”:n kanssa olemme suomentaneet muutamia SkepticalSciencen tekstejä, ja lisää on tulossa. Toistakseksi suomennettuna löytyy seuraavat tekstit: […]

The other two subtitle files at Climate Crock vids are now up on YouTube:

    More to come..

What makes this interesting is the automatic translation feature on YouTube. You can translate the subtitles from one language to another. Automatic translations are far from perfect, but I think it’s better than nothing.

Here we go, meet Skeptical Science in Spanish (translated by Jesús Rosino):

  4. We are trying to build up some info in Swedish here: http://uppsalainitiativet.blogspot.com/

    Great jobb!

Rather interesting looking stuff you have there. Unfortunately I don’t understand enough Swedish to know what exactly you’re saying there. (Kind of embarrasing really, because I grew up in a town that had half of the people with Swedish as their native language.)

Hmm… perhaps someone should start translating your site to Finnish…😉

You could try GoogleTranslate. It work’s pretty well from swedish to english. Not so well from swedish to finnish, it’s actually quite horrible in that way.

Off course, Magnus or somebody else could also join the Skeptical Science translation team.

Yes, I tried it. The result is quite bad; lot of familiar words, but you still need to scratch your head for a while to understand it. It might even be easier to just read yourself and get the translations only for the unfamiliar words. Especially as I do understand Swedish a bit anyway.

Mahtavaa!!

Gravityloss gave us some excellent feedback (while also thanking us for great job – the first word there reads “Excellent!!”) on the Climate Denial Crock of the Week translations. Main points mentioned were: sometimes lines are too long and texts change too fast. I agree with the presented critique and I hope we can improve ourselves in the future on those points.

Tässä uusin, joka toivottavasti on mainitsemiesi epäkohtien osalta parempi kuin edelliset:
